Our Way of Working in Kilpisjärvi

Our Way of Working in Kilpisjärvi

Destination Kilpisjärvi is an independent, locally operated business owned by Martti Niskanen and run together with his wife, Sinikka.

We live and work in Kilpisjärvi, and our approach to guiding is shaped by our everyday life in this Arctic environment.

Weather, terrain, and seasonal conditions define how we plan and guide our tours. We work with nature, not against it, and adapt our activities to the conditions of each day.

Private Tours and Small Groups

Most of our experiences are privately guided for 1 to 6 guests. We also offer selected small-group tours with a maximum of 12 participants. Some activities have smaller group limits.

Keeping groups small allows us to provide personal attention, maintain a comfortable pace, and respond to the needs of our guests.

We believe that discovering Arctic nature is best enjoyed without unnecessary hurry.

Safety and Local Knowledge

Safety is central to everything we do.

Our knowledge comes from living and working in Kilpisjärvi and guiding visitors through its changing seasons.

We know the local terrain, weather conditions, and the challenges of travelling in this remote Arctic region.

Every tour includes safety guidance and appropriate equipment. Routes and activities may be adjusted when weather or other conditions require it.

Our priority is to offer enjoyable experiences while making responsible decisions about safety.

Experiences Shaped by the Seasons

Our activities follow the natural seasons of Kilpisjärvi.

During late summer and early autumn (August–September), we explore the changing colours and landscapes of our Arctic nature.

Our winter season usually begins in late November, depending on snow and weather conditions, and continues into May.

From the darkness of the Polar Night to the bright days of spring, each part of the winter offers a different way to experience Kilpisjärvi.

Respect for Arctic Nature

The Arctic environment is beautiful but fragile.

We plan our routes carefully, keep group sizes limited, and consider local conditions when choosing where and how to travel.

We also share our knowledge of the surrounding nature, local life, and seasonal changes with our guests.

For us, responsible guiding means respecting the environment and helping visitors understand the place they have come to discover.
