Off the Beaten Path: Discover the Three-Country Cairn in Kilpisjärvi
Travel to the northernmost tripoint in the world, where the borders of Finland, Norway and Sweden meet at the Three-Country Cairn.
The cairn stands in an uninhabited border region. It is surrounded by wilderness in Norway and Sweden and by Malla Strict Nature Reserve on the Finnish side. There are no roads and no permanent settlements, only the open winter landscape and the yellow concrete cairn built in 1926.
Although the cairn lies far from roads, it is conveniently accessible from the village of Kilpisjärvi.
Cross Frozen Lake Kilpisjärvi in Comfort
You travel across frozen Lake Kilpisjärvi as a passenger in a sled pulled by your guide’s snowmobile. Seated on cushions and wrapped in warm blankets, you can simply relax and enjoy the changing winter scenery.
Your local Destination Kilpisjärvi guide drives the snowmobile, so you do not need any previous snowmobile experience.
Where Three Countries Meet
At the cairn, you walk around the monument, crossing between Finland, Norway and Sweden in just a few moments.
But this tour is about more than reaching a famous border landmark. Along the way, your guide shares stories about the history of the three countries, life in this remote border region and present-day village life in Kilpisjärvi.
The journey gives you time to experience the silence and vastness of the northern landscape, and to understand what it is like to live where three countries and their histories meet.
