Local Life & Sámi Reindeer Traditions
Discover the spirit of Kilpisjärvi during the snow season with a local guide who has called this Arctic village home for nearly two decades. This small group tour introduces you to daily life in Finland’s only mountain village and connects you with Sámi culture and reindeer traditions.
Village Walk in Winter Setting
Your guide meets you in the village center and leads you on a gentle walk, sharing stories about local history and the realities of living far above the Arctic Circle. Snow-covered landscapes surround you, and you’ll hear how nature, traditions, and resilience shape life in this northernmost community.
Sámi Experience at Tornensis Family Homestead
Your walk continues to the Tornensis Family homestead, where you are welcomed into a traditional wooden hut with an open fire. A member of this reindeer-herding family shares insights into Sámi traditions, the age-old practice of reindeer herding, and the meaning of Duodji – traditional Sámi handicraft that reflect both creativity and everyday usefulness. Afterwards, step outside to meet the reindeer and feed them. Throughout the visit, your guide is by your side to enrich the experience.
Plan Your Participation!
This guided small group tour is available from late November until late March. Each tour lasts 3 ½ hours and is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. However, please note that during the visit to the Tornensis Family Homestead for the Sámi Experience other visitors may also be present.
