Join us for a leisurely hike and campfire picnic. Explore nature with a local guide and hear the stories of the village and of everyday life in Kilpisjärvi.

The duration of this experience is 3 - 4 hours and it is carried out from June 15 to November 15, until the permanent snow cover arrives in Kilpisjärvi.

Summer in Kilpisjärvi

Summer in Kilpisjärvi is unique season filled with light and greenery. Summer is cool, even chilly, and the daytime temperature can drop to near zero centigrades (32 F) even in July which is our warmest month, with average mean temperature around 11 C (52 F). In August the nightless nights are over, the days shorten and there's a scent of autumn in the air. The first northern lights often offer their first appearance at the end of August.

Autumn foliage in September

While it is not possible to pintpoint the exact time when the colors of autumn are at their best, we expect them in early September. It is a delightful time for both locals and visitors to observe the rapid changes in the foliage when nature prepares itself for the approacing winter.

Autumn in Kilpisjärvi is not to be missed

In October the sun is still high and the days can be pleasantly warm, but they can also be cloudy, rainy and windy. The nights are frosty and the first snowfalls cover the ground. The lake starts slowly freezing over. The village is peaceful and a veritable haven for visitors seeking a relaxing break from their urban life.

Towards the Polar night in November

Autumn turns into early winter in November. The days grow quickly shorter until finally the Polar night, called ”kaamos” in Finnish, sets in at the end of the month. The sun dips below the horizon, not to rise again until the middle of January. Now is the time of the beautiful blue dusk which replaces sunlight around noon hours. The ground is wrapped in a blanket of snow which provides plenty of light, and the lake starts forming its solid ice cover. While the average temperature is just below freezing in October, it's – 7 degrees Celsius in November.

Guided nature trip with campfire picnic

During a guided nature trip you'll hike in the nature surrounding the village, with the help of Nordic poles or snowshoes, depending on the season and the prevailing weather.

A picnic is served and stories are shared around an open fire in the nature.
